FLORHAM PARK, N. Dave Hollins Phillies Jersey .J. -- Rex Ryan stood in front of his team for one last time and teared up. This wasnt exactly how the New York Jets pictured their season to end. But with his bold Super Bowl hopes dashed, Ryan couldnt help but get emotional. "Im Irish. What do you want?" Ryan said Monday, trying to lighten the mood. "Its hurtful and Im extremely prideful. I want to be the best. I want to win. Sometimes it comes out like that." He had what some players called a "harsh" talk, telling his guys they needed to get back to being a team and not just a group of individuals. "He was crying because he loves us," guard Matt Slauson said Monday. "He respects us, he knows what we are capable of and we didnt even come close to our goals." Thats for sure. This was the year the Jets were going to deliver the franchise its long-awaited second Lombardi Trophy. Ryan guaranteed it. And after two straight trips to the AFC championship game, who could doubt the possibility? But the Jets (8- never really put it together and it was a somewhat surreal setting a day after a loss at Miami ended a disappointing season as the players cleared out their lockers. "Its not fun losing," quarterback Mark Sanchez said. Added Slauson: "Were sick, were disappointed and were hurting a lot." And Ryan placed the blame squarely on himself. "I dont think I had the pulse of our team the way Ive done in the past," he said. "When I met with players as well today, I think that became clear to me." Several players were already gone when the media got to the locker room, and a few -- including the normally media-friendly Darrelle Revis and Nick Folk -- chose to not speak. Linebacker Bart Scott bristled as he was walking out and was asked about a report that he likely wouldnt be back next season. "All I know is Ive got a guaranteed contract for $4 million," he snarled. He then used an expletive at a photographer and stuck out his middle finger, adding: "Take a picture of this." That wasnt all. Wide receiver Santonio Holmes, benched Sunday after arguing with teammates in the huddle, went to his locker, grabbed a box and a helmet and was then escorted out of the locker room by a public relations staff member without talking. Holmes was still the hot topic Monday after he was yanked by offensive co-ordinator Brian Schottenheimer -- a move Ryan supported, but didnt know about when it first happened -- as the Jets tried to rally in the fourth quarter. He was held without a catch for the first time in his 88-game career and sulked while standing alone on the sideline as the team lost 19-17, ending the Jets playoff chances. "I wouldnt single Santonio out like he was the sole problem," receiver Patrick Turner said. "Its a team sport and ones wrong, were all wrong." Sanchez declined to comment on what went on with Holmes, saying it was an "in-house" issue that shouldnt be discussed through the media. But ESPNNewYork.com reported that the two clashed at a meeting last week, and several players questioned Holmes captaincy throughout the season. The Jets wont have to worry about that next season. Ryan acknowledged that he "made a huge mistake" naming six team captains -- he previously only had game captains -- and no one will wear the captain "C" on their jersey anymore. "I think that pulls away from the team a little bit," Ryan said of having captains. "It may work for other franchises, but it doesnt work for me." Holmes and guard Brandon Moore went back and forth earlier this season when the receiver criticized the offensive line for not protecting Sanchez or giving him enough time to throw long passes. Moore said that kind of talk could have "a fracturing effect" -- and it appears he was right. "Theres a lot of reasons we didnt have the kind of season we wanted, and chemistry can go down on that list," Moore said. He declined to discuss whether a team could accept a player who was deemed by some to have "quit" back next season. "I dont really have anything to say about 10," Moore said, referring to Holmes by his jersey number. Ryan said there are "a lot of positive things about Santonio," but acknowledged that there are also things that need to be improved and believes Holmes will return next season. Still, most players seemed to think there would be plenty of changes this off-season. They could start with offensive co-ordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who has been criticized all year for failing to develop Sanchez and run an effective and consistent offence, which finished 25th overall. Ryan and general manager Mike Tannenbaum reiterated that they expect Schottenheimer to return next season -- unless hes hired as a head coach elsewhere. Tannenbaum, who said Schottenheimer has done "a really credible job," confirmed that New York gave Jacksonville permission to speak to the 38-year-old co-ordinator for the Jaguars head coaching vacancy. "I think the criticism specifically about Brian," Ryan said, "I believe, is unfair." Sanchez has also been the subject of lots of criticism as he didnt progress in his third year as many had hoped, but Tannenbaum said hell be the starting quarterback next season. "I think Marks work speaks for itself," Tannenbaum said. "I think its more good than bad and far from perfect. It has to be more consistent and I think if Mark was sitting right here he would be the first one to tell you." That vote of confidence came despite Sanchez throwing three interceptions against the Dolphins and doing little to cement his role as the Jets long-term answer at quarterback. He threw a career-high 26 touchdown passes, but seven of his 18 interceptions came in the last three games -- all losses. "My job is to come back a better quarterback, a better leader," said Sanchez, who was unsure if hed need further tests on his neck and right shoulder which bothered him late in the season. The Jets will also have several major decisions to make on potential free agents, including Plaxico Burress, LaDainian Tomlinson, Jim Leonhard and Sione Pouha. "My job is to build a team," Ryan said. "For whatever reason, I dont think we were as close as a football team as we were the first two years and now we are sitting on the outside looking in. Were watching other teams in playoff games that we think we should be in. And I think thats painful, beyond belief." Notes: Tannenbaum said the team will speak with offensive line coach Bill Callahan over the next few days about returning. His contract is up after this season, but Tannenbaum said "we hope to have him back." ... Slauson said hell have an MRI exam on one of his shoulders Tuesday to check out the nature of an injury that initially occurred late last season. Chase Utley Red Jersey . The Tampa Bay Lightnings star forward told reporters after Mondays practice that he is targeting the teams Saturday game against the Detroit Red Wings for his long-awaited return. http://www.philliesbaseballshop.com/chase-utley-phillies-jersey/ . JOHNS, N. http://www.philliesbaseballshop.com/tug-mcgraw-phillies-jersey/ . The Red Wings were set to give Mantha an opportunity to make the roster at training camp after he won the QMJHL scoring title last season with the Val DOr Foreurs. BOSTON -- A year after the Boston Marathon bombings, the Red Sox had plenty of chances to make a special day even more memorable. They almost succeeded. Boston scored one run in each of the last three innings -- stranding runners in scoring position in all of them -- -- in a 7-6 loss to the Baltimore Orioles in Mondays traditional Patriots Day morning game Not bad, though, considering the Red Sox trailed 6-0 after three innings. "Our guys battled and fought and did a good job of making a game of it and it came down to the last pitch," David Ross said. "We did a good job of representing Red Sox baseball today. We just want to win, obviously, for the fans and the whole situation." Boston beat Tampa Bay 3-2 in last years Patriots Day game. About 40 minutes after the final out, two bombs went off near the marathon finish line a little over a mile from Fenway Park, killing three spectators. This year, Mondays game began at 11:09 a.m., 12 hours, 28 minutes after Bostons 6-5 win ended Sunday night. "Once you show up here, we have a job to do," Baltimores Adam Jones said. "It doesnt matter what time it is." The game started about an hour before Meb Keflezighi crossed the finish line as the first American man to win the Marathon since Greg Meyer in 1983. A long, loud cheer went up when the result of the race was shown on the centre field video screen. Bostons Mike Napoli called Monday "a special day." "Of course, you want to go out there and win," he said. That seemed unlikely when Baltimore scored six runs off Clay Buchholz in the third inning. The Red Sox, who overcame a 5-0 deficit Sunday, started to come back again. "It never seems to be enough against these guys," said Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis, who fielded Mike Carps grounder and stepped on first for the last out. "They claw and battle and continue to score runs and put pressure on us to score more runs." Boston loaded the bases with one out in the ninth on a single by Brock Holt, a double by Dustin Pedroia and an intentional walk to David Ortiz. One run scored on Napolis groundout to second before Tommy Hunter escaped with his fifth save. Nothing special for Hunter. "Its another inning, another game," hee said. Chuck Klein Jersey. "I was actually pretty calm." Wei-Yin Chen (3-1) and five relievers pitched well enough for Baltimore to gain a split of the four-game series. Baltimore started the third with consecutive singles by Steve Lombardozzi, David Lough, Nick Markakis, Nelson Cruz and Davis that produced three runs. Jones drove in another on a forceout at second base before a run-scoring double by Steve Clevenger and an RBI single by Jonathan Schoop made it 6-0 and knocked out Buchholz (0-2). Buchholz had slept over at Fenway Park after Sunday nights game and doesnt regret the decision. "Id have had to wake up earlier than I did here to get here this morning," he said, "so that had nothing to do with it." Boston cut the lead in half with three runs in the fifth on RBI doubles by Jackie Bradley Jr. and Pedroia and a sacrifice fly by Holt. In the seventh, Boston made it 6-4 on Ross first homer and then had a chance to go ahead after Holt singled and Pedroia walked. But Ortiz hit an inning-ending groundout. Ryan Flahertys RBI single in the eighth made it 7-4 before Napolis solo homer in the bottom half. Singles by Xander Bogaerts and Daniel Nava put runners at first and second with one out, but pinch-hitter Jonathan Herrera struck out as the runners took off and Bogaerts was tagged between second and third. "It takes some added energy," Boston manager John Farrell said of the repeated comeback attempts. "Wed certainly like to get the offence going a little bit earlier rather than having to dig out of a hole." NOTES: Marc Fucarile, who lost his right leg in last years Boston Marathon bombing, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. He was married in Fenway Park last Thursday. ... Bostons jerseys had the word "BOSTON" on the front instead of the usual "RED SOX." ... Davis singled and walked twice and tied his career-high by reaching base in 17 straight games. ... The Red Sox send Jon Lester (2-2) to the mound Tuesday night for the start of a three-game home series against the Yankees. Masahiro Tanaka (2-0) pitches for New York. The Orioles will start Miguel Gonzalez (1-1) against R.A. Dickey (1-3) of the Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game series at Toronto.
