PHILADELPHIA -- Bostons collapse was one for the ages. David Pizarro Jersey . The Flyers had a comeback for the history books. Down 3-0 in the best-of-seven series, then down 3-0 in Game 7, the Philadelphia Flyers erased the long odds and pulled off a shocking rally to win the decisive game 4-3 and move on last season to the Eastern Conference finals. Those kind of runs happen only, oh, every 30-plus years or so. In fact, the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1975 New York Islanders were the only NHL teams to overcome 3-0 deficits to win a best-of-seven playoff series. Here they are again, one year later ... in the same round. The 2010 East chokers vs. the 2010 East champs. The Bruins sounded this week as if they were giving testimony before a congressional committee: Theyre not here to talk about the past. "Last year was last year, this year is this year," Bruins winger Shawn Thornton said. "Half the team has been turned over. Weve brought in some great people. So, its a whole new year." The Flyers, well, they also tried to insist this is a brand new series and their run of wins in Game 4, Game 5, Game 6 and Game 7 mean as much this May as playoff wins from 30 years ago. They just werent convinced Boston had forgotten about its flop. "Im sure theyre going to use that to their advantage," Flyers centre Danny Briere said Friday. "But at the same time, it goes both ways. We might be in their heads, as well. We have that confidence that no matter what happens, we seem to play well when were playing against them." The Bruins, of course, want to put the series to rest. Once the puck drops in Game 1 Saturday in Philadelphia, Boston will surely have an extra shot of motivation against the team that spoiled their Stanley Cup run. "Its always a new situation, its a new opportunity, and thats how were looking at it," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "Just a new opportunity for us to get past these guys and hopefully win this series." Laviolette said the Flyers also have big motivation: Win a Stanley Cup. But it is true -- like all rosters from year to year -- that these teams are quite different. Philadelphias Simon Gagne scored the Game 7 winner a year ago, but was traded in the off-season to Tampa Bay. Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask has been replaced by Tim Thomas. And Bruins forward Nathan Horton, a newcomer, scored the overtime winner in Game 7 to give them a win over the Montreal Canadiens in the first round. Brian Bouchers run as the starting goalie ended in Game 5 when he sprained the MCL in his left knee. That opened up the job for Michael Leighton, who led the Flyers to Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals. But Boucher is back in net, for now, after the Flyers used a three-goalie carousel in a seven-game first round vs. the Sabres. Boucher, as well, brushed off the significance of last years upset. "Last year plays no role into this year. This is a whole new year," he said. "There are new faces in both locker rooms." New and old Flyers say they can win again -- just maybe save the rallies for another day. "Hopefully, we dont spot them a three-game lead again," Briere said. "That would be a lot easier." Sometimes, that win-or-else mentality fuels a post-season run. The Flyers won Game 6 in overtime in Buffalo and returned home to rout the Sabres in Game 7 to complete yet another series comeback, this one from down 3-2. "I dont believe in momentum in the playoffs," Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said. "I believe in desperation." The Bruins had their share of desperation in the first round against Montreal. Boston rallied from a 2-0 hole in the series, a two-goal deficit in Game 4, and won a Game 7 in which they lost two leads. The Boston franchise had never won a playoff series after trailing 0-2. The Bruins were also the first team to ever win a seven-game series without scoring a power-play goal. They went 0 for 21 vs. the Canadiens. The Flyers struggled with the man advantage as well, before scoring two power-play goals in Game 7 vs. Buffalo. "There are lots of things that pop up and catch your attention at different times," Laviolette said. "Certainly, power plays can win series, and penalty kills can win series. I guess that just proves not to say that it cant win." The Bruins had four players score multiple goals in their series, but none who matched James van Riemsdyks four and Brieres six for the Flyers. Thomas saved 93 per cent of his shots in the first round and has a huge edge over the veteran Boucher. But this series isnt as much about how teams fare on power plays and shots on goal. It could be about how the teams handle questions and quiet doubts that fill every series. If Boston takes a 2-0 lead, the Flyers will shrug it off. Hey, they won from that spot before. The Bruins will be bombarded with questions about how can they be sure they wont cough up a lead. "It doesnt really have a factor on this years series, except for the fact we havent forgotten about it because (the media) remind us day in and day out," Thornton said, "And Im sure you will for the next two weeks." Damian Lillard added 21 points and 11 assists and hit a pair of clinching free throws with 2.1 seconds left for Portland, which beat Oklahoma City for the second time in December. Portland (25-7) snapped a two-game losing streak but still trails Oklahoma City (25-6) by a half-game in the Northwest Division standings. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Peyton Manning is back in his element, barking out calls, throwing passes and working out with his new teammates. It sure beats watching, wondering and worrying. Hes still finding his comfort zone in Denver after spending 14 seasons in Indianapolis, but Manning is back serving as both quarterback and coach on the football field instead of pacing the sideline and wondering when his neck is going to allow him to return to the huddle. Manning and his new teammates reported to the Broncos headquarters Monday morning for the start of the teams off-season conditioning program. After some work in the classroom and weight room, Manning threw passes to his new receivers during some on-field work without the coaches, who arent allowed to join them outdoors until OTAs start up in May. "Everybodys been looking forward to this day for some time now," Manning said. "I thought it was a productive first day, but weve got a lot of work to do." He didnt want to make any rash judgments about his receiving corps and although he said he was pleased with his first official workout since signing a five-year, $96 million deal with Denver on March 20, Manning declined to talk about his health or the progress hes made as he regains his arm strength following a series of neck operations that sidelined him for all of last season and led to his departure from Indy. "Im not going to get into these weekly reports. Ive kind of been there and done that all fall of last year," said Manning, who is rehabbing under the direction of head athletic trainer Steve "Greek" Antonopulos and new strength and conditioning coach Luke Richesson. "Im enjoying being under one roof, being supervised by those two guys," Manning said. Wide receiver Eric Decker, who has caught more passes from Manning than anyone else over the last month thanks to a series of workouts at local high schools, said the four-time MVPs passes were precise and powerful. "Im not his doctor, I dont know how to speak on his health, but catching balls from him, it looks like theres nothing wrong to me," Decker said. "Hes throwing great balls, hes getting the work in just like were getting the work in, knocking the rust off. I see no issues at this point." Although hes been putting in a lot of miles finding remote high school fields to practice on, Manning said he hasnt really gotten to know his new city yet. "Its been all business," he said. "Everybodys asking where Im living. Ive been living over here in the facility." Rehabbing, lifting weights and studying his new playbook. Manning said he was glad to throw the ball around at team headquarters rather than sneaking around to the local high school fields to play catch with Decker and good friend Brandon Stokley, who signed a one-year deal to return to the Broncos on Monday. Manning, 36, has always embraced the off-season regimen, and he said hes sure he wasnt the only one who was relieved Monday when NFL teams opened their doors for the voluntary off-season conditioning programs that were scuttled last year by the leagues lockout. "I am (excited), theres no question. I think a lot of pllayers around the NFL will tell you the lockout threw a lot of players off their routine and what theyre used to," Manning said. Gerard Pique Jersey. "So, I (like) the fact that everybodys allowed to be in the facility now working out under one roof, we can throw on the field now, right next to the weight room now as opposed to going to a high school. That was what you had to do, but its nice to be able to do everything here and have some time with the coaches, as well." Because the coaches cant join them on the practice fields until next month, the players run the on-field portion of the program themselves, and this arrangement is perfectly suited for Manning, who will direct the installation of the Broncos new no-huddle offence. Manning, though, said he felt like the new kid in school. "I think a number of us did. I was with Jacob Tamme and Joel Dreessen, Caleb (Hanie), the same way. We have some new guys. So, Im learning as we go, as well," Manning said. "Certainly when you get out there on the field and youre throwing passes to receivers, you feel a little more comfortable there, as far as knowing what youre doing a little bit." Decker said Manning is making everyone around him better because of his famous work ethic, and cornerback Champ Bailey said that goes for Denvers defence, too. Bailey sent Manning numerous texts during the quarterbacks whirlwind free agency tour pleading with him to come to Denver. "Why? Because hes an amazing player and his leadership alone is bar none the best in the league," Bailey said. "You need a guy like that on your team, and where I want to go, what I want to do toward the end of my career is win a championship and I feel like he gives us the best chance." Bailey said he puts Manning at the top of the QB list because of the "way he breaks down a defence and pretty much tell you what youre in and half the guys on defence dont even know what were doing. Its sad but true. You try to trick him as much as possible, but for some reason, somebody always tips him and he knows, he just knows." Bailey said the Broncos have to be careful they dont take Mannings presence for granted. "I tell everybody in our defensive room, Just because we have a guy like that, its not going to get easier for us. Weve got to work harder because the expectations are here," Bailey said, holding his right hand high. "Hes going to kick our butts in practice, so weve got to be ready to go." Notes: Manning said he was excited for his little brother, Eli, to host "Saturday Night Live" next month as he once famously did. "Ill be tuned it," Manning said. ... WR Demaryius Thomas was in attendance Monday but he hasnt been working out with Manning like Decker has. Thomas underwent surgery on his left pinky last month to remove a pin that was inserted after it was shattered during a practice in September. ... The Broncos have rescinded their $1.26 million tender for restricted free agent DT Ryan McBean, the Denver Post reported. McBean received a tender at the original (fourth) round level. McBean is facing a six-game drug suspension to start the 2012 season.
